San Galgano
44 km from Fattoria di Corsignano
The great Abbey of San Galgano was built between 1220 and 1268 in the period in which the Romanesque style merged with the nascent Gothic style of French import.
The shape of the Abbey is the classic Latin cross.
The complex consists of the Hermitage or Rotonda di Montesiepi and the ruins of the great Abbey of San Galgano and it is one of the most suggestive in Tuscany.
In the Rotonda di Montesiepi, there is the Sword of San Galgano stuck in the rock. At the end of 1789, after the Montesiepi Rotunda was elevated to Pieve, the great Abbey San Galgano was deconsecrated and left permanently to ruin. Today, for its evocative scenography, it is a place for concerts.
